Outsider Hats and a Rose Saturday 12:00 - 6:00 $130
  Jennifer Whitmer

Student Level:
All - no hat making experience needed
Type of Workshop: Project

In this fun, experimental hat making class students will learn the basics of working with fine parisisal straw to create a one of a kind, vintage-style hat using easy “outsider” (that is, non-traditional and geared towards the novice) millinery techniques. Using their own heads as hat blocks and their own sense of whimsy and design, students will learn a free-form approach to hat making by using a sewing machine to create form in a shapeless straw bag known as a “hood”. Each hat becomes entirely unique by using easy methods of wiring, pleating, folding and machine/hand stitching the straw.

As for trim detail there is nothing like a beautiful, hand-turned rose. Students will learn to make an old fashioned rose with leaves from luscious hand-dyed, silk charmeuse. There will be time during class to create several roses of different colors and sizes to use as hat trim or as a versatile brooch.

Note: Minimal sewing machine skills are necessary - the ability to thread and operate one’s own sewing machine and to sew forward and backward are all the skills that are needed.
