    In this unique class you will study with both a dyer, Lorri Scott, and a milliner, Jennifer Whitmer.  Spend the first half of the day with Lorri learning hand-dyeing methods using fiber-reactive dyes on silk. Arashi shibori, dip and vat dyeing techniques will be taught as a way to create beautiful and interesting fabrics. Students will then have the opportunity to dye assorted silk fabrics and ribbon using methods they have learned.

    In the second half of the day Jennifer will teach you how to turn your fabulous pile of hand-dyed fabrics and ribbon into charming wayward blooms using millinery ribbonry techniques. Students will take home several flower pins that can be used as lovely and versatile accessories to decorate hats, jackets, t-shirts, purses, or worn as hair ornaments.

    Supplies Provided by Instructor: dyes and equipment for dyeing , *PVC pipes, latex gloves, disposable plastic aprons, pin backs, crinoline, glue

    * Instructor will have several PVC pipes to share. If you would like your own, please bring a 2” diameter PVC (not ABS !) cut to a length of 15”. These pipes are used for the shibori dying techique.

    Supply List:
  • Saran wrap
  • Crochet cotton size 8 - 10 or similar string (can be poly, cotton, or blend)
  • Masking tape (1/2” -1”)
  • Paper towels
  • 2 –3 1” foam brushes
  • optional PVC pipe
  • 6” metal ruler/ sewing gauge, or tape measure
  • several long needles for hand sewing
  • 1 spool heavy quilter’s thread in medium gray or brown
  • scissors
  • straight pins
  • a few special buttons for flower centers  

    Note: Dyeing can be messy so wear old clothes and old shoes
