Sumptuous Sumi and Other Stories $125
Jill K. Berry
Student Level: all levels of experience
Type of workshop: Mostly process and some sheets of painted papers

I use a lot of paper and I like to paint my own. Sometimes I journal all over it and then paint over the top. Sometimes I use symbols or abstract marks and put layers on top of that. Often I use sumi ink, a very black and smooth ink to add a special graphic dimension to my work. This class is about that process, using sumi, acrylics, paste, pastels, pencils, words, symbols and layers to create the papers I want to use in my art. They are very non-traditional paste papers (although I don't always use paste), and can be used anywhere decorative paper is called for.

We will try five exercises that I developed to get different effects on the paper, and then tear down some of the sheets to show the magic of using these sheets. What is "too much preciousness" turns into just the right touch when the sheets are torn down into small books, cards and collage. We will discuss the nature of paints, how to avoid making "mud", and the road to the perfect palate. This process is as fun as finger painting for adults!

Kit Fee of $15 payable to instructor at classtime includes: paper, 12 colors of paints, paste, sumi, mark-making tools, lots and lots of stuff.
