Pochoir is a refined stenciling technique used to create prints or to add color to pre-existing prints. It was most popular from the late 19th century through the 1930's in Paris. Associated with Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Pochoir was used in fashion, patterns and architecture. Some artists who used pochoir in their work were Henry Matisse, Georges Braque, and Pablo Picasso.

The use of stencils and masking dates back to as early as 500 C.E. and continues to this day. We will cut interactive masks and use the coloring technique of pochoir to create layers of patterns. Some of the cutting techniques I learned from Beatrice Coron, www.beatricecoron.com who has given me permission to use them here.
