Many of the influences that effect my artwork are stories from childhood. These are often filled with magic and wonder along with a cast fantastical creatures and improbable characters. As of late I've been particularly intrigued by the human animal hybrids of storyland. Characters like the White Rabbit and the Caterpillar of Alice in Wonderland, or the Three Little Pigs and Big Bad Wolf all reside in a strange world where the beasties act, talk and dress like humans.

In this workshop we are going to create mixed-up beasty busts and magical menageries. Students will gather up a variety of human and animal figurines and we will reimagine them into unusual creations. They will then be displayed on a small shrine or plaque. When you're done they will be, as Tony the Tiger says: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • $30.00 includes:
  • glues
  • clay
  • paint

Student should bring:

  • A human bust, figurine or statuette. Could be of a Greek god, Napoleon, etc. It could be made out of anything you like but ideally plastic, wood or resin makes life easy. Check the second hand stores they should have lots of these forms.
  • Animal toys or figurines to mix and match with our human form. Mickey Mouse ears, elephant noses, etc. Once again plastic, resin or wood would be ideal.
  • Random tiny doodads. Interesting buttons or gears or typewriter parts etc. Decorative elements that might adorn elaborate critters.
  • Paint Brushes (a couple small detail brushes, and some cheap brushes (1/2 inch to 1 inch in size)

  • Heat gun
  • Dremel with cut off wheel
