There's a river in Wyoming, high up in the Big Horn Mountains. Its turns and twists have tumbled down wild, through the ages. In my corner of the river, a tangled willow patch twines in on itself, right down to the water's edge. This place is the inspiration for my Rustic River Pendant.

I've acquired a batch of glorious ocean kyanite crystals, from a source in Australia, that I'll be sharing in class. I'll provide each student with one river-colored kyanite beauty (some are large, some are smaller), or you can bring a stone of your own. The schist and shine of these ocean kyanites reminds me of the surface of moving water. You'll set your stone in a channel of silver with a heavy, soldered post at one end, and balled silver studs, at the other. I'll show you how to add a rustic texture, and patina, to your metal that will give it an "excavated" look.

The beautiful circular elements for our pendant were inspired by the entangled, riverside willow patch. You'll be shaping and soldering your own "willow" bail then work on the other components, links and toggle clasp, as time allows. These components, especially the toggle clasp, are truly gorgeous.

In class, we'll cover annealing, hardening, shaping, filing, texturing, balled wire, soldering and finishing. I'll provide each student with a generous length of wire silver solder for stick soldering. If you've never done silver soldering before, this class is a great introduction to that skill. All of the techniques you'll learn in this class are easily transferable to your other projects.
