This three day workshop may be taken as an entire unit (18 hours) or a la carte (one or two days only). The unifying title and theme of this course is "In the Round", wherein students will explore the design potential of the common circle both in its whole form and in pieces.

Day One is titled "The Ancient and Abstract" and focuses on the creation of a thoughtfully constructed ring or pendant, built of sterling silver and inspired by the circular structure of a volcano. Students will work to manipulate surface textures and simple forms through the use of old and new silversmithing techniques, very few tools, and lots of fire. An excellent class for students looking to practice basic soldering skills, learn some texturizing tricks, and create uncommon art from common shapes.

Day Two is titled "Radial Armor" and focuses on the creation of a multilevel sterling ring (or pendant, student choice). Students will build a circular piece, inspired by an ancient shield, all while navigating the idea of radial symmetry, concentrating on sweat soldering numerous layers, and building on skills from Day One's project as we take the circular theme and begin breaking it apart into more complex shapes and ideas.

Day Three is "Circling the Possibilities" and brings us to the end of our exploration as we move from the stylistically Neolithic to the Nouveau. Through the creation of an elaborately layered piece, students will be pushed to ideate beyond the confines of the circle while still keeping it at the heart of their designs. The focus of the class will remain largely on heavy embellishment, soldering skills, and, most importantly, breaking away from viewing the humble circle as a simpleton in the design world. Truly, the possibilities are endless...
