Have you ever wanted to be able to tell a little more in a painting? More about your subject and where they have been and what they are like? In this class we will be creating pet portraits using layers of color and visual texture using papers, stencils and marks. We will grid our pet image in the midst of the wonderful chaos and go from there. Happy accidents abound!

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • $20.00 includes:
  • Clear gesso
  • Gloss Glazing Liquid
  • Gloss Medium
  • Use of stencils
  • Chalk

Student should bring:

  • 1 Canvas - (stretched, panel or board) Square 16x16, 18x18 or 20 x20. Let the size of your suitcase be your guide. No larger than 20x20.
  • Reference you will be using. 8x8 photocopy will be easier to grid. Head and shoulders.
  • A variety of papers such as:
    • Children's book pages
    • Map or atlas pages
    • Music pages
    • Gel prints on deli or copy paper
    • Tissue paper
    • Napkins
    • Handmade paper
    • (No shiny or thick papers)
  • Anything you are drawn to and/or relates to your subject.
  • Water container. Wide and low. Use for soaking paper then for painting.
  • Ruler. For tearing paper and gridding.
  • Paper Plates for palettes
  • Acrylic Paint. Paynes Gray or Black, White, Red, Blue and Yellow minimum. I use Golden.
  • One Acrylic Paint Marker. Fine. Any medium to dark color
  • Brushes. 1", 1/2", 1/4" and a liner. Your favs.
  • One cheap brush to apply gesso.
  • Old room key or old credit card
  • Spray water bottle
  • Paper Towels & wipes
  • Makeup sponges
