So, what's the catch? The catch (or clasp) with be the focus of this full day class. We will look at a variety of clasps that you can make to add a truly handcrafted closure to your pendants, necklaces and bracelts. No longer will you be limited by commercial catches for your creations. In this class you will fabricate three types of clasps...the box clasp, the fold-over clasp and the spring clasp.

  • 10mm x 40mm 24g half-hard sterling
  • 12mm x 26mm 24g sterling
  • 8mm x 34mm 24g sterling
  • jump rings 4mm I.d. sterling
  • fold over clasp
  • 15mm x 35mm 20g sterling
  • Large tube 2.57 copper
  • smaller tube 1.45 copper
  • spring clasp
  • 4mm x 15mm tube sterling
  • 30mm 16g wire sterling
  • 30mm 14g wire sterling
  • steel spring
  • 8mm x 8mm 24g sheet sterling
  • sterling silver jump rings
  • silver solder
  • butane torches and fuel
  • oxy/propane torches and fuel
  • pickle pots and chemicals
  • flux
  • handouts

Student should bring:

  • Basic jewelry making tools will be needed, including:
  • round nose, chain nose and flat nose pliers
  • hand files or needle files
  • small hammer for tube setting
  • metal shears
  • jeweler's saw and blades (# 2/0 to 4/0)
  • bench pin
  • bench block or anvil
  • safety glasses
  • Calipers - digital calipers can be found online or at Harbor Freight for around $20
  • mallet
  • hammer
  • wire cutters
  • scribe
  • bezel rocker, burnishers or bezel pusher

Optional:

  • Dremel tool or flex shaft for drilling
  • Work light - battery operated are best because power is not always available at every table
  • 3" or 4" C_Clamp for holding bench pin on to table
