The idea of Building Talismans Jewelry with objects has always been intriguing to me, that is to build adornment with a sense of history and purpose. I have studied adornment with historical purpose extensively and used this idea to create my body of work. These human-made objects are made to speak to something sacred, beyond the self, and beyond time. And whether they are worn for protection, power, healing, magic, or some other mystical purpose, they are the most ancient of material attempts to reach out for some tangible quality that you may be looking for in your life.

The common denominator in all the talismans, amulets, relics, and prayer box is imbedded meaning. The materials used, the way a piece was formed, the intention of the maker are all combined to express a particular meaning.

In these three workshops learn to build Talismans by working and building with my own techniques and practical skills of metalsmithing.

The 3 workshops can be taken separately learning one technique or together as a series to enrich your skills and create a holistic experience. These workshops build on each other to expand your knowledge and exploration of materials for an understanding and freedom of metalworking.

The 3 workshops are offered individually on the schedule:

  • Day 1: Bezels Expanded
  • Day 2: Altering Objects - Caging, Sticks and Links
  • Day 3: Scrap Bezels - Joins and Links

This workshop is a one day workshop which is Day 1 of Building Talismans Jewelry.

Work beyond the traditional bezel form to encase a faceted crystal stone in silver. Explore the idea of non-traditional techniques while using bezel wire, shot plate, patterning and layering of silver wire.

Learn how to bend filigree bezel wire and add more layers to expand a full vibrant look that is fit for a queen.

Learn to twist wire, use a shot plate to create pattern and form, pick and sweat solder. Learn to balance and set a faceted stone in silver. Build a ring or pendant form. If you are in all three days, learn to stack and assemble.
