"We often come to the table with the expectation that there is a right way and a wrong way to approach the canvas and fully expect that in every art medium there is the potential for a good or bad outcome based on how skilled we are at following the rules. The idea of letting go of control is intimidating, especially when using precious found materials and investing in expensive art supplies. We see the work of others online and in magazines, and think about the technical skill involved in producing that work of art and, if we have never had formal art training, immediately disqualify ourselves from being able to create something we feel emotionally connected to." ~ Crystal Marie, The Art of Expressive Collage
Take this workshop as a stand-alone experience or as an extension of my one-day introduction to the art of collage and the intuitive process.
This two day workshop will lead the student on a journey to discovering their own style as an artist through the art of collage. Beginning with a more intimate scale, the class will help the student lean in to a deeper understanding of what it is they have to say in their own work, not simply as a direct or overt story, but in the hidden details, the subtle cues, the metaphor and symbolic meaning to be discovered, and a curiosity about what attracts us to the things we hunt and gather. The scale of the work created will increase incrementally as we grow in confidence, learning to let go of a plan and letting the work speak without forcing the outcome. Discussion and demonstrations will include creating a pleasing composition at any scale and developing works that flow well as a series suitable for professional presentation.
Students can expect to leave this workshop with a series of completed collage works, a better understanding of their own unique voice & style, and the confidence to continue to pursue their creative goals and dreams, whether personal or professional.
