In this workshop a student can learn to use charcoal to make a portrait and then apply the portrait to a surface - we will collage and paint around it. You will learn what Susan knows about working with Charcoal on paper that allows you to erase, painting as well as painting with glazes, collages, color combinations that work. Susan will demonstrate each of these and assist participants to creating a beautiful piece of art when they leave.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • $5 includes:
  • BFK Paper
  • Stencils
  • Joint compound
  • Use of pan pastels
  • Charcoal powder
  • Glazing medium
  • Graphite paper
  • Exacto knives to use
  • Handout

Student should bring:

  • Minimum of 11x14 to Maximum of 24x30 - this surface can be wood, wood panel, canvas panel or canvas. This is your choice.
  • 5x7 to 8x10 size photo copy of a face. I would recommend that you bring both sizes of the same image. Black and white photos are fine
  • Soft Charcoal stick
  • Black and white Charcoal pencils
  • Soft brush, no bigger than 1/4 to 1/2 inch
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock, enough to cover your entire surface
  • Burnisher or old gift card
  • E6000 glue
  • 3-d items to use on the piece. This can be anything from metal, resin items, fabric, etc.
  • Paint brushes of varied sizes including a cheap brush to use with mediums, you can get these at Michaels for less than a dollar.
  • Fluid Matte Medium
  • Decorative papers of your choosing
  • Pencil and Gummy eraser
  • Acrylic paint, I prefer Golden Fluid Matte Paints, however you can use what colors and brands that speak to you. Please include some skin colors.
